Abstract

The watershed development approach started with soil water conservation measures and then laid emphasis on water harvesting and increasing crop productivity. The programme deals with the management of all natural resources within the boundary of watershed.

Women are playing important role in agriculture and rural economics. Due to sufficient availability of water for irrigation, crop diversification and intensification practices have been adopted in watershed. An attempt has been made to introduce proper mechanization practices in order to reduce the drudgery of women and increase the productivity of potato crop in Randullabad Watershed of Satara district of Maharashtra. BAIF Development Research Foundation, Pune through Grampanchayat of Randullabad is implementing the Indo-German Watershed Development Programme in this village from year 2009-10.

Present paper deals with the impact assessment of farm mechanization for drudgery reduction related to potato crop and growth of women. Crop wise calendar activities were discussed in focus group. Women in village of Randullabad spent maximum time on potato cultivation. Tractor mounted potato planter and harvester were introduced to save time of cultivation. The implements were purchased under the apex body of SHG’s called "Sanyukta Mahila Samitee". It has been found that drudgery is reduced by 84 days of physical work out of earlier 120 days. Time saved due to mechanization is being utilized for other activities like maintaining health, recreational activities, SHG meetings, income generation and for overall well being of the family.

Key words: Potato, women drudgery, farm mechanization, health hazards.
